Second Stage of Renewable Energy Potential Mapping Completed

Following the publication of the first renewable energy potential maps in December last year, additional studies have now been released on the National Geoportal and the Ministry of Climate and Environment Geoportal. This marks the second and final stage of the task implementing the provisions of the RED III Directive and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO), prepared by the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

The mapping of renewable energy sources (RES) indicates areas with the most favorable conditions for using various types of renewable energy. It covers the entire territory of Poland, identifying locations that meet specific criteria adopted for the siting of technologies utilizing renewable energy sources, as well as accompanying infrastructure.

In the first stage, maps of solar radiation energy potential and onshore wind energy potential were made available.

In the second stage of the task, mapping of the potential for biogas/biomethane energy, deep and shallow geothermal energy, hydropower, offshore wind energy, as well as electricity storage and thermal energy storage, was developed and published.

How to Access the Renewable Energy Potential Maps:

a) On the National Geoportal

In the “Map Content” (Polish: Zawartość mapy) section, expand:

“Data from other institutions” (Polish: Zawartość mapy),
then “Ministry of Climate and Environment” (Polish: Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska),
then “Renewable Energy Potential” (Polish: Potencjał energetyki odnawialnej), where you will find:

  • Solar radiation energy potential (Polish: Potencjał energii promieniowania słonecznego)
  • Onshore wind energy potential (Polish: Potencjał energii wiatrowej na lądzie)
  • Offshore wind energy potential (Polish: Potencjał energii wiatrowej na morzu)
  • Biogas/biomethane energy potential (Polish: Potencjał energii z biogazu/biometanu)
  • Hydropower potential (Polish: Potencjał energii wodnej)
  • Deep geothermal potential (Polish: Potencjał geotermii głębokiej)
  • Shallow geothermal potential (Polish: Potencjał geotermii płytkiej)
  • Electricity storage potential (Polish: Potencjał magazynowania energii elektrycznej)
  • Thermal energy storage potential (Polish: Potencjał magazynowania energii cieplnej)

b) On the Ministry of Climate and Environment Geoportal
