Diplomatic relations between Poland and Burundi were established on August 8th, 1962.

Political cooperation

Political cooperation after 1989

From January 22 to February 3, 1999, the mission of the special envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, ambassador K. Śliwiński, in Africa, including Burundi (in Uganda and Rwanda) took place. During the 26th African Union Summit, on January 26-27, 2016 in Addis Ababa, a meeting of Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Joanna Wronecka with Foreign Minister Burundi Alain Aimé Nyamitwe took place. The meeting served to deepen mutual relations and promote the Polish candidacy for the UN Security Council for the years 2018-19. Again, Deputy Minister Joanna Wronecka met with Foreign Minister Burundi on the sidelines of the 16th Francophone Summit on November 26-27, 2016, in the capital of Madagascar. In 2019, during the submission of credentials, Ambassador Krzysztof Buzalski met with President Pierre Nkurunziza. Until 2016, Burundi remained within the territorial competence of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nairobi, and from 2017 - the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dar es Salaam. Burundi ambassador from Moscow is accredited in Warsaw. The apostolic nuncio in Burundi is a Pole, Archbishop Wojciech Załuski.

Recognition of academic qualifications

Documents confirming education are recognized on general principles. Poland and Burundi did not sign any bilateral agreements in this respect.

Polish institutions operating in Burundi

Until 2011, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland operated in Bujumbura. Currently, the office's activities are suspended. There are no other Polish institutions in Burundi. The country is under the territorial competence of the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
