We continue to support blind and visually impaired children in Rwanda

17.12.2023

This year, thanks to a Small Grant from the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dar es Salaam, the Educational Institute for Blind Children in Kibeho, Rwanda, gained a new, safe space for children and teenagers with visual impairments, intended for games and sports. Such an access to a multi-functional sports ground will help eliminate various barriers that the children face in their everyday life.

Increasing physical activity will not only improve their fitness and health and increase their self-esteem, but will also strengthen their independence and resourcefulness in life. It will also have a positive impact on building social bonds with their peers. This will be possible thanks to the project implemented in 2023 with Polish Aid funds, consisting in creation of a multi-functional sports facility for the center's pupils, including a football and goalball pitch, a track for short-distance running and climbing frames. A fence surrounding the pitch was also built to ensure the safety of the facility's users, as well as a new path with a metal handrail and metal stairs to facilitate independent and safe movement of students between the school and the playground have been installed. The new infrastructure will allow for the development – in safe conditions – of sport passions of the institute's students who were forced till the moment to use a pasture covered with sharp grass to play football (with a sonic ball).

The Educational Institute for Blind Children (EIBC) in Kibeho, which was visited by the chargé d'affaires of the Polish Embassy in Kigali Tomasz Gajc as part of the monitoring of this year's development project, is run by the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters Servants of the Cross from Laski near Warsaw founded by Mother Elżbieta Róża Czacka (a blind Sister) in 1918. The mission of the Congregation is above all to serve the persons with visual impairments. The official opening of the educational facility in Kibeho took place on September 28, 2009. The school follows a normal curriculum, however the latter has been adapted to the needs of people with poor eyesight or blindness.

Since its establishment in 2009, the center has been a beneficiary of projects under Polish Aid -  including its construction that was financed thanks to Polish funds within the development cooperation. The school enjoys a very good reputation on the general map of Rwandan schools.
