Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in the Hague: strengthening of our unity and transatlantic dimension is extremely important

14.06.2022

The head of the Polish government took part in a meeting of a group of EU countries in the Hague at the invitation of leaders of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Netherlands. The heads of governments of Belgium, Portugal and Latvia, as well as the president of Romania, also participated in the discussion. The meeting was part of the preparations for the NATO summit in Madrid, which will be held on 28-30 June. The main topic of conversation was the war in Ukraine. The participants also discussed the idea of strengthening the EU and NATO flanks.

Help for Ukraine

The situation in Ukraine and the military support for our eastern neighbour constituted the central themes of the meeting of the group of EU Member States belonging to NATO. The head of the Polish government emphasised that it is also important to support Ukraine's ambitions to join the European Union by stating:  “We support the granting of candidate status to Ukraine as soon as possible because the Ukrainian people need hope. And this is the greatest hope for the future.”

The EU countries and the North Atlantic Alliance should increase their support for Ukraine, which needs weapons to fight for its freedom. As Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called: “We are not doing enough, we have not done enough to defend Ukraine, to support the Ukrainian people in defending their freedom and sovereignty. That is why I urge you to do much more when supplying artillery weapons to Ukraine.” He also added: “That is why it is so important that we focus on effective and efficient assistance and support for Ukraine – here and now, not in a few weeks, not in a few months, but here and now.”

Reconstruction of the security architecture in Europe

In the face of war unleashed by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian territory, it is essential to rebuild the security architecture in Europe. We also support the idea of increased transatlantic cooperation. We are in favour of integrating the European Union's defence architecture into NATO while respecting national prerogatives. The European defence policy must form part of an even larger alliance. This will allow us to maintain security in Europe and provide better assistance to our eastern neighbour in the face of Russian aggression.

“First of all, I think it very important that we strengthen our unity and transatlantic approach. I truly believe in transatlantic ties. It is obvious for all of us – in view of such threats and barbaric attacks as the Russian invasion of Ukraine – that NATO can be the only barrier, the only element preventing further attacks on the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union,” stressed the head of the Polish government.

We are also striving to improve military mobility, which can be achieved by increasing EU funding and improving the conditions for submitting civil-military transport infrastructure projects.

Expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance

The heads of governments of Poland, Belgium, Latvia, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands and the President of Romania also discussed the expansion of NATO. In May 2022, Sweden and Finland officially filed their applications to join the North Atlantic Alliance. The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a shift in public opinion in both of these countries. Poland fully supports their decision to join the Alliance.

June NATO summit in Madrid

On 28-30 June 2022 in Madrid, heads of states, governments and the Alliance will meet during the NATO summit. Representatives from Sweden, Finland, Georgia, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, the European Council and the European Commission, among others, will also attend this event. The meeting will focus on further military and political support for fighting Ukraine. The discussions on the strengthening of the North Atlantic Alliance's eastern flank will continue. During the summit, we will ask the allies to increase the number of NATO troops on the borders with Russia and deploy them in permanent bases.
