Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment Ireneusz Zyska at the Areopag renewable energy conference

09.12.2021

Government Plenipotentiary for Renewable Energy Ireneusz Zyska participated on 9 December 2021 in the conference "Areopag of Renewable Energy", organised by the Association for Efficiency named after prof. Krzysztof Żmijewski. The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views, as well as to discuss the most current challenges and problems currently faced by the renewable energy sources (RES) industry.

As the Deputy Minister Ireneusz Zyska emphasised during the conference, striving for energy neutrality requires responsible actions that will allow to maintain the competitiveness of the economy while keeping energy prices at a level acceptable to end users. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop the power system taking into account the growth of demand for power and maintaining the quality parameters of supplied energy.

The current model of discounts has led to an erroneous belief that the power system is a commonly available energy store. Meanwhile, while developing RES, we cannot forget about the capacity of power grids

- said Deputy Minister Ireneusz Zyska.

It is necessary to develop solutions that will translate into increased flexibility of the power system and increased possibilities to connect RES to the grid

- he added.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that in this difficult moment for the economy the government does not cease its efforts to modernise the country and reach for new technologies. According to the forecasts of the Institute of Renewable Energy, in 2025 the total PV power may amount to approximately 17 GW. In addition, RES auctions to date indicate that the total onshore wind capacity could be around 10-11 GW in 2025. With this in mind, it is necessary to increase the flexibility of the system.

Nearly PLN 140 billion is the amount that, according to PEP2040, the largest energy companies involved in electricity distribution and transmission will invest in network infrastructure by 2040. Energy storage facilities will also be needed, which is reflected in the amendment to the Energy Law prepared by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, which was adopted by the Sejm in May 2021 and came into force in July 2021. The new legislation introduces and at the same time unifies the definition of an energy storage facility appearing in various laws, defines the rules for connecting the storage facility to the grid and introduces favourable solutions for accounting for energy storage.
