Energy efficiency improvements in Kłecko - supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)
25.09.2026
Before the approaching heating season, good news for the children and young people, as well as the parents and teachers of the Z. Imbierowicz Special Educational and Care Centre in Kłecko: energy bills will be much lower than before. The funds saved on expenditure can be allocated for educational purposes. During the meeting with journalists, Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment, presented the effects of the comprehensive thermal modernisation of educational establishments under the NRRP.
Highlights
- Over PLN 113 million has been allocated to the Wielkopolska region for green investment in education from the funds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. 42 schools and kindergartens in the Wielkopolska region will enter a new era of comfort and efficiency due to thermal modernisation.
- Nationwide, 500 educational establishments have already benefited from such grants, with the total value of the projects exceeding PLN 1.8 billion.
- This year, Poland has received the approval of the European Investment Bank for funding of the priority programme on Improvement of the energy efficiency of educational buildings, with a budget of PLN 2 billion. The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management - the FM Operator undertakes intensive works aimed at launching the call for proposals still before the end of this year.
- As part of the programme, it will be possible to receive a grant covering up to 85% of eligible costs. These measures will improve the energy efficiency of another hundreds of educational buildings: schools and kindergartens, youth care and socio-therapeutic centres, special educational centres, vocational training centres and sector-specific skill centres.
As early as 2023, when the centre’s extension was almost completed, it was clear that such a comprehensive, modern educational facility needed to be created for the children in the care of the Special Educational and Care Centre in Kłecko. I am very pleased that several years after the extension was completed we have also managed to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of the older part of the centre. We always refer to it as the “double eco”. On the one hand, it is an investment project that carries not only ecological benefits but also economic ones. In this case, on the one hand, it means transition to combined heat and power generation, thus, a simultaneous production of electricity and heat but, on the other hand, it translates into 60% savings on bills. Above all, it means more comfort of teaching for children. On the one hand, huge savings and the reduction in expenditure on heat, but on the other hand, a more comfortable learning environment for children during the spring and summer months
- said Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska in Kłecko.
During those weeks, when higher temperatures are recorded, even in early spring, the end of the school year is approaching, with children fighting for their school certificates and better marks in order to achieve their goals - the classrooms were becoming stifling and sweltering. Now, after the modernisation work has been completed, the temperature in the classrooms will rise more slowly in summer, as thermal modernisation not only generates savings in winter but also means that the classrooms heat up more slowly in spring and summer
- Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska added.
Comprehensive thermal modernisation of the Z. Imbierowicz Special Educational and Care Centre in Kłecko involved the insulation of external walls, the replacement of window frames and external doors, the modernisation of the hot water and central heating systems, including the replacement of the heat source (construction of a new boiler house, replacement of boilers and installation of the combined heat and power unit) and radiators -resulting in reducing the building’s heating costs by nearly 60%. This investment in the school development resulted in improved thermal comfort (reducing overheating in summer and heat loss in winter), healthier and more pleasant indoor environment, lower building maintenance costs, increased energy efficiency and better conditions for pupils and the staff. The value of the work completed exceeds PLN 2.8 million, of which over PLN 1.7 million came from the NRRP.
Why is thermal modernisation of schools and nurseries necessary?
Energy-efficiency upgrades help to reduce energy consumption and improve comfort within buildings. Insulating buildings, replacing windows, modernising heating systems and switching to renewable energy sources mean that classrooms have the appropriate temperature in both winter and summer, whilst air quality improves significantly. As a result, pupils learn in better conditions, whilst local authorities incur lower running costs.
Thermal modernisation is one of the most effective measures for helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Thanks to such investments, schools and kindergartens are becoming more comfortable and healthier environments for children. That is why we support local authorities in implementing changes that bring about real improvements to day-to-day conditions in these establishments.
