EU Council of Energy Ministers: Poland's firm voice in favour of energy price cuts

06.12.2022

"Today, the key issue is to reduce the price for gas. Here there is no room for discussion or interpretation," said Anna Moskwa, Minister for Climate and Environment, at the EU Energy Council meeting on 24 November 2022 in Brussels. Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński also took part in the meeting.

EU Council of Energy Ministers Poland's firm voice in favour of energy price cuts

The EU ministers responsible for energy once again met in Brussels to set the so-called price cap for gas. The proposed mechanism of setting maximum market prices for gas is intended to reduce the burden on EU citizens and companies operating in the EU and to prevent speculation. The unjustified Russian aggression against Ukraine has led to an unprecedented increase in natural gas prices, and continued Russian attacks on critical infrastructure can have further serious consequences for the European natural gas and electricity markets.

Both Poland and the majority of Member States are demanding that the legislative proposals adopted should lead to a reduction in energy prices.

The document in the form proposed two days ago does not solve the problem. Poland expects decisive action of a legislative nature regarding the introduction of a gas price cap at a level acceptable to end users.

Minister Anna Moskwa said during the Council meeting.

The Council agreed that until the legislative proposal on the market correction mechanism (gas price cap) is agreed, further voting will be withheld. Both Poland and the majority of Member States do not agree to accept any further legislation until an agreement on the gas price cap.

Only when we reach a compromise on this issue can we go back to deciding on other regulations,

indicated the Minister for Climate and Environment.

The head of the climate and environment ministry also stressed Poland's readiness to continue working.

After months of talks and many written proposals, today we were expecting concrete arrangements in order to present a ready document at the next Council. Once again, I emphasise - we are ready to meet at any time and talk until the end. Because this is what our citizens expect of us,

 Minister Moskwa pointed out.

The Council meeting was also attended by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Mr German Galushchenko, who gave an update on the state of Ukraine's electricity infrastructure and appealed for support in stopping the Russian madness.

I thank the Czech Presidency for inviting the Minister to speak at today's Council. Russia is unrelenting in its attacks on electricity infrastructure. Poland stands by Ukraine and we continue to appeal to all countries to help rebuild Ukraine's electricity and heat systems,

Minister Anna Moskwa emphasised.
