Head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment at the 12th Petersberg Climate Dialogue

10.05.2021

Adaptation to climate change, issues related to commitments on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, financing the implementation of the Paris Agreement and preparations for COP26 in Glasgow, including the negotiation of Article 6 of the above-mentioned agreement, are the main topics of the talks that took place during the 12th Petersberg Climate Dialogue. The event, which took place on 6-7 May 2021, was attended by Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, and Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

As Michał Kurtyka, Minister of Climate and Environment stressed, the timeframe for submitting national contributions is one of the outstanding issues that we need to clarify before the next round of NDC Nationally Determined Contributions) in 2025.

This is one of the topics where we can make significant progress. We should ensure a common approach which leaves room for flexibility. In the European Union, we have the practice of setting 10-year targets. We are now finalising European climate law, which is based on these aspects and sets out 10-year intermediate targets on the path to our EU goal of climate neutrality in 2050,

he said.

During the video conference, the minister emphasised that the ministerial consultations in the period preceding COP26 and during the conference could be the best step forward in establishing a timeframe for the NDC.

This is no longer a technical problem because we all have experience with the NDC and the current timeframe, so the ministerial consultations before the next UN climate summit can help to determine this issue. Poland is ready to give full support to the COP26 Presidency in this respect,

he said.

Minister Michał Kurtyka's position was supported by successive ministers taking the floor during the Dialogue.

The discussions held during the 12th Petersberg Climate Dialogue were co-chaired by President of COP 26, Alok Sharma, and German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Svenja Schulze. The event was opened by Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, and Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany. Almost 40 countries were invited to the dialogue.
