Minister Anna Moskwa in Davos: Today, many proposals discussed at the international level are based on our experience in becoming independent of hydrocarbon supplies from the East

27.05.2022

Energy security in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine is one of the major subjects of this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The event, held on 24-25 May 2022, was attended by the Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa and Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

Minister Anna Moskwa in Davos

On the first day of her stay, Minister Anna Moskwa attended the “Oil and Gas Community Dinner”. During the meeting, the Minister talked about, inter alia, Polish experience related to guaranteeing energy security in the context of rapid de-Russification of the economy.

For many years, Poland has been warning against making the EU energy sector dependent on Russian raw materials. We have consistently implemented the strategy of diversification, i.e. differentiation of directions and sources of gas supplies to Poland”

– she stressed.

It turned out that we were right. Today, many proposals discussed at international level are based on our experience in becoming independent of supplies from the East. This success tastes bitter

– she added.

According to the Minister, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine confirmed the rightness of the Polish government’s determination to become completely independent of Russian gas.

We have always known that Russia is not a reliable partner. It is thanks to infrastructure investments, such as connections with other Member States, the Baltic Pipe or LNG terminals, that the Polish gas system, as one of few in the European Union, is able to completely abandon Russian supplies.

– she explained.

The event was also attended, inter alia, by the Head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, who in the forum congratulated Poland on its courage and determination in supporting Ukraine. Minister Anna Moskwa encouraged the representatives of the countries present at the event to join the IEA and stressed that Poland appreciates cooperation and support on the part of the Agency.

The role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security

During the Swiss World Economic Forum, Anna Moskwa, the Minister of Climate and Environment, also attended the panel on nuclear energy, during which she talked about the role of nuclear energy in the energy transition and about Polish plans to implement it in the coming years.

We consider nuclear energy as a valuable source of energy and a major industrial technology making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change, socio-economic development and what has recently become essential due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine – ensuring energy security.

– she noted.

According to the Minister, the view on nuclear energy is changing in many countries.

In view of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, more and more countries consider energy from #atom as a key element of their energy security strategy. Among others, the Belgian government decided to extend the operation of its nuclear power units by a decade

– pointed out Minister Anna Moskwa.

She stressed that in Poland nearly three-quarters of residents support the construction of nuclear power plants in our country.

I think that the support is even stronger now – we realise that #atom may be the key to strengthening energy security and independence.

– she said.

For the first time in the history of Poland, we have very advanced activities regarding nuclear energy. The works related to the construction of the first Polish nuclear power plant are underway according to the schedule. We will start its construction in 2026.

– she added.

As explained by the Minister of Climate and Environment, the objective is to launch the first unit with a capacity of approx. 1-1.6 GW in 2033. Further units will be implemented every 2-3 years, and the whole nuclear programme assumes the construction of 6 units.

In December 2021, the preferred location of the first nuclear power plant in Poland was indicated. Currently, we are in dialogue with potential strategic investors from France, South Korea and the United States.”

- she informed.

World Economic Leaders

The Head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment also attended the World Economic Leaders, where, inter alia, she appealed to the participants to introduce new fiscal solutions for more ambitious de-Russification of the energy sector, which will allow to become independent of the Russian Federation and to stop financing the criminal regime.

According to Minister Anna Moskwa, currently, it is essential to stop the war in Ukraine and its negative consequences for the energy sector, and the situation of a real security threat takes precedence over the economic consequences and increased expenditure.

We must remember that the funds for the war come from the sale of energy raw materials. There is no doubt that Russia uses its energy resources for political reasons and is not a reliable trading partner.

– she said.

Bilateral meetings and Polish-Ukrainian cooperation

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Minister Anna Moskwa and Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński also attended a number of bilateral meetings, using the highest level of representation of the energy sector, both state-owned and private, present on the spot. Minister Anna Moskwa, at the invitation of Yalta European Strategy, also attended the so-called “Ukrainian Breakfast”, where they discussed the strengthening of energy security and the necessary solutions that will be useful also in the times of peace and will support the reconstruction of Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
