Minister Kowalczyk goes back to COP24 during the European Economic Congress

13.05.2019

“Climate and the economy after COP24. Where to now?” was the topic of the discussion panel at the 11th European Economic Congress in Katowice. The debate, which took place on 13 May 2019 at the European Congress Centre, was attended by the Minister of Environment, Henryk Kowalczyk.

During the debate, Minister Kowalczyk summed up the COP24 summit, which took place in December 2018 in Katowice.
The COP24 climate summit was a resounding success. We established a framework of rules that will enable the implementation of the Paris Agreement, said the Minister of Environment.
The Katowice summit also served as an opportunity to sign three crucial declarations – the Silesian Declaration on Just Transition, the Electromobility Declaration and the “Forest for Climate” Declaration.
COP24 is a success for all parties, who understand the importance of the long-term objectives of the Paris Agreement, including achieving climate neutrality, or a state where the absorption of CO2 by biosystems – primarily forests – will balance out emission, consistently reduced due to technological progress and transition of the energy sector, the Minister emphasised.
Minister Henryk Kowalczyk also pointed out that nearly all the decisions required for the full implementation of the Paris Agreement were agreed upon in Katowice.
Now, we have to deal with the most difficult part – implementing its principles and achieving its objectives. This cannot be done without the cooperation and commitment of everyone, he added.
The European Economic Congress is the largest economic event in Central Europe, which takes place on 13-15 May 2019 in the International Congress Centre and in the Spodek Arena Complex in Katowice.
