Minister Kurtyka on the Polish-Japanese cooperation in the energy sector

03.03.2021

Polish-Japanese cooperation in the energy sector is one of the topics of the on-line investment conference “Why Poland now? Attractive destination for energy and infrastructure projects”, organized by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency and the Polish Embassy in Tokyo. The event, which took place on 3 March 2021, was attended by Michał Kurtyka, Minister of Climate and Environment.

Minister klimatu i środowiska Michał Kurtyka

In the course of his speech, Minister Kurtyka pointed out that Poland has for years been acting in favour of a climate policy that would support the achievement of the objectives set out in the Paris Agreement.

Environmental protection and the fight against climate change have become a political priority for both Poland and Japan. In this context, we welcome the recent commitment of the Prime Minister of Japan to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Building a low-carbon economy is a huge challenge for every country, he said.

The head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment highlighted that energy transition, as required by European Union policy, is the biggest challenge, but also the opportunity in Poland’s economic development.

The implementation of the Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 will mean making strategic decisions to exploit the domestic potential in the fields of economy, raw materials, technology and human resources and to create a leverage of economic development through the energy sector. We see energy transformation as a pillar of the economic recovery strategy and therefore we look forward to working with Japan as well, he said.

During the conference, Minister Kurtyka recalled that one of the important and significant areas of the Polish-Japanese cooperation is clean energy technologies, which have a key role to play in our efforts to promote climate neutrality.

Against this background, we appreciate Japanese achievements in developing the hydrogen society. As we are at the stage of designing Polish hydrogen strategy, we are very interested in Japan's vast experience in developing hydrogen technologies as key factors for the future energy transition,” he pointed out.

Minister Michał Kurtyka also stressed the important role of technological cooperation in the development of nuclear energy.

Poland, as a country developing its first nuclear energy programme, appreciate the exchange of experiences with its Japanese partners, he said.

Head of the ministry emphasised that Japan is for Poland one of the key partners among the non-European countries.

Poland is open to further strengthening cooperation with Japan in the introduction of new technologies in the field of electromobility, including in the scientific field. We also see an opportunity in cooperation on the exploitation of the potential of electric vehicles as energy storage facilities, he concluded.
