Minister Moskwa at the ceremony of laying the cornerstone for the construction of two PGE gas units at the Dolna Odra Power Plant

26.11.2021

“Today’s ceremony of laying the cornerstone for the construction of two low-emission gas and steam units at the Dolna Odra Power Plant is an important day for the Polish energy industry. This project will allow for energy transition, taking into account the conditions of the national energy mix” – said the Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, on 25 November 2021, during the ceremony of laying the cornerstone for the construction of this project.

As Minister Moskwa pointed out, the new steam and gas units at the Dolna Odra Power Plant are one of the most important projects serving the pursuit of the “Energy Policy of Poland until 2040” and being an element of a just energy transition towards low and zero emissions.

Without the new steam and gas units at the Dolna Odra Power Plant, it will not be possible to achieve the PEP2040 goals. This project is awaited by 2.5 million households which will be supplied with electricity and heat from it.

– she said.

The construction of two new gas units will allow to restore the generation potential of the Dolna Odra power plant. The new unit powered by low-emission gas will replace coal power being phased out, thus contributing to the gradual decarbonisation of electricity generation in Poland. This project is a guarantee of the long-term operation of the power plant, which plays a strategic role in the National Power System as the only system producer for the north-western area of Poland.

The new generation units will also allow to use the potential resulting from the availability of fuel supplied to the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and the planned route of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline. In addition, the new units will be characterised by high flexibility, which is important due to the high installed capacity of onshore wind farms in Pomorze and planned new capacities in offshore wind farms.

This project is also necessary because it is required to balance the energy system along with the growing role of renewable energy sources.

– stressed Minister Moskwa.

We also congratulate on the speed of this project. The state of progress of constructing the two gas and steam units is ahead of the assumed schedule – the start of operation of the new power units is planned for the fourth quarter of 2023

– she added.

In Nowe Czarnowo, two generation units with a total capacity of nearly 1,400 MW will be constructed, which will not only be the most modern units in Poland, but will also be in the lead of the most modern gas power plants in Europe.
