Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, joins the 65th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (MAEA)

The conference is held on 20-24 September 2021 in Vienna. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the event is organised in the hybrid formula. The Head of the Polish delegation participated in the meeting remotely.

When presenting the position of our country in the IAEA forum, Minister Michał Kurtyka stressed that nuclear energy is a key component of energy transition process in Poland towards implementation of the objectives listed in the Paris Agreement and achieving climate neutrality.

The Minister emphasized that Poland adopted the two essential documents in this area. The baseline one – “Polish Energy Policy until 2040” presents the vision of reconstruction and transformation of the energy sector as a whole. This strategy confirmed the plans to launch 6-9 GW of nuclear power until 2043, which accounts for nearly 15% of the future generation capacity in the national system. At the same time, the updated Polish Nuclear Power Programme acts as the roadmap for implementation of these ambitious, yet feasible plans.

The Minister added that according to Poland nuclear energy is a crucial and necessary component of the future low-carbon global energy mix.

Minister Kurtyka stated also that Poland actively participates in the international cooperation focused on continuous improvement and consolidation of hightlevel of global security by the activities towards non-proliferation of nuclear weapon.

The annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency is attended by high-rank representatives of 173 Member States. The meetings summarise the measures taken last year and establish the priorities for peaceful use of nuclear energy for the upcoming 12 months.
