Norway and EEA Grants with Energy

19.10.2023

Upcoming World Energy Day

Environment Energy and Climate Change Programme MF EOG #ENERGY

World Energy Day was established in 2012 at the World Energy Forum in Dubai. Its purpose is to draw attention to:

  • sustainable resource management and
  • increasing energy efficiency.

These issues relate to many areas of life. Whether we as individuals, municipalities, districts and provinces, countries, small, medium-sized or large companies or all kinds of organisations. Each actor should take action to improve energy efficiency and sustainable resource management in its area of operation.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Climate Programme

These issues have been an area supported by the EEA and Norway Grants for many years. Also under the current third edition of the funds, Climate Programme Beneficiaries in the energy area implement projects aimed at increasing energy efficiency, use of renewable energy sources and raising public awareness. A wide variety of activities are being implemented across Poland, with more than EUR 100 million allocated.

Thermomodernisation projects

The call for thermo-modernisation of school buildings in the Climate Programme attracted a great response and, as a result, the original allocation of EUR 20 million was doubled after Donor approval. Our Beneficiaries still have the opportunity to apply for additional funds for implemented projects.

As a result of the 35 projects, more than 100 school buildings and sports halls are being modernised to increase energy efficiency and comfort. As part of some projects - in addition to deep thermo-modernisation - energy management systems are being installed to reduce energy consumption and PV photovoltaics. All these activities aim to achieve an environmental effect in the form of reduced emissions of pollutants, including carbon dioxide, and a social effect by raising community awareness of climate change. The financial aspect, namely the reduction of energy costs for municipalities, is also an important factor.

We invite you to take a look at our new subpage entitled Our thermo schools - effects of thermo-modernisation projects (website in Polish), where you can find out what problems are being overcome by entities facing the challenge of thermo-modernisation of school buildings and what measures they are taking to achieve this. We also show the benefits of thermo-modernisation and the effects of the measures carried out.

Cogeneration projects

Electricity and heat can be produced in a single technological process called cogeneration, which reduces primary energy consumption. As part of the Climate Programme, we support cogeneration and our beneficiaries are small, medium and large enterprises. For example, Zespół Elektrociepłowni Wrocławskich Kogeneracja S.A. is implementing the project Construction of a New Combined Heat and Power Plant Czechnica, and Zakłady Górniczo-Hutnicze "Bolesław" S.A. (Mining and metallurgical plants „Bolesław” joint-stock company) is implementing the project Construction of a cogeneration gas source.

The implementation of these projects will make it possible to achieve primary energy savings of over 177,000 MWh/year. To present this figure in more detail, it is worth noting that the annual electricity consumption of a family of four is estimated to be around 2.3 - 5 MWh. Cogeneration projects will also result in a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions (almost 233,000 tonnes/year).

District heating systems

The construction and expansion of district heating systems is also supported under the Programme. The 7 beneficiaries selected in this call are carrying out activities aimed at becoming an efficient system and reducing 'low emissions'. Projects are developing combined heat, power and cooling generation systems and replacing coal-fired sources with more environmentally friendly ones.

The projects implemented in this call are very diverse. For example, the Waterworks of Krakow are implementing a project entitled Modernisation of electric power, heat and biogas management on the premises of the Płaszów Sewage Treatment Plant, while PEC EŁK is implementing “Replacement of a WR-25 coal-fired boiler with a wood-chip-fired biomass boiler with fuel structure and accompanying heat in the PEC Ełk heat plant" project. On the website of the project Modernisation of the heat generation source with the use of high-efficiency cogeneration and RES at PEC in Lubartów, you can see the implementation of one of its phases involving the construction of a district heating network in preinsulated pipe technology.

In Wrocław, ecological heat from municipal sewage and rainwater will be obtained through the implementation of the WROMPA - Heat Pump in Wrocław project. According to the project website, this is the largest installation in the country for obtaining energy from wastewater.

Renewable energy

We also support Beneficiaries who are involved in the construction/modernization of renewable energy systems - water energy and deep geothermal. These sources can be used for heating purposes or in power plants. Under the Climate Programme, the Gubin Hydroelectric Power Station is being modernised and the Chochołowskie Thermal Spa is building a geothermal cogeneration plant.

Education

It is also worth mentioning that all projects in the Climate Programme carry out various information activities to raise awareness of energy efficiency. These include media campaigns, training for educators, cooperation with research institutions and universities, information brochures and posters, installation of devices showing energy consumption - "saving meter", thematic lessons, educational classes and workshops, competitions, clubs at schools involved in the project, thematic trips and bicycle rallies, information meetings with energy advisors, educational conferences, study visits, information/educational spots and broadcasts.

An example of such activities can be the RES APPLICATION in the project Increasing the production of energy from renewable sources and improving the energy efficiency of school buildings in the Strzelce Opolskie commune. We have collected examples of educational activities carried out by Climate Programme Beneficiaries on the subpage Environmentally Sensitive.

Get inspired

These activities have an impact on local communities in various regions of Poland. They can also make each of us aware that we can contribute to more rational and environmentally friendly energy management by our behaviour.

More about energy projects in the Climate Programme

On our website we provide a database where you can find descriptions of each of the projects implemented in the Climate Programme. Check out the projects implemented in the energy area of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Programme in the Programme's Project Database.
