Poland is lobbying the UN for a fair system of mining and trade in critical raw materials

The Chief National Geologist and Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Krzysztof Galos, took part in a high-level UN plenary debate on critical raw materials essential for the energy transition. Poland is calling for the establishment of a fair and effective system for the extraction, production and trade of critical raw materials, which will take into account the interests of both resource-rich countries and recipient nations.
We believe that bilateral and multilateral cooperation on critical raw materials will help to strengthen the functioning of markets, increase the participation of resource-rich countries in supply chains, and boost the creation of added value at a local level. With its many years of experience in the fields of mining and processing, as well as just transition, Poland has an important role to play in this process
– said Minister Galos.
The aim of the debate was to exchange views on issues related to international cooperation in the field of raw materials, the fair distribution of revenues from raw material production, the maintenance of environmental standards when mining, and the security of supply chains.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN Sustainable Development Forum and was attended by over 50 countries, as well as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, the head of the UNDP, Alexandre de Croo, and the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswall.
