Poland's largest battery-based energy storage facility is developed in Żarnowiec
19.09.2025
Poland is accelerating its energy transition by investing not only in renewable energy sources, but also in technologies to ensure the stability of the power system. Construction of the country's largest battery-based electricity storage facility has started in Żarnowiec.
Highlights:
- PGE has launched the construction of a battery-based energy storage facility with the installed capacity of 263 MW and the storage potential of 900 MWh.
- The project is located in Żarnowiec, Pomorskie voivodeship, close to offshore wind farms and a pumped storage power station.
- The project received the first energy storage promise in Poland and a contract in the capacity market from 2029.
- The storage facility will stabilise the energy system, supporting the integration of RES and balancing the operation of offshore wind farms.
- PGE plans further development of energy storage facilities, including investment in Gryfino and 26 distributed installations in five voivodeships.
The development of renewable energy sources must be accompanied bythe construction of a stable and flexible power system. Therefore, we are investing in energy storage facilities - from large-scale ones, such as Żarnowiec, to prosumer household installations. It is our goal that by the end of our term of office, 200,000 Polish homes should have their own energy storage facilities. This is real support for households and for the entire system
- said Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment at the ground-breaking ceremony.
The Minister has emphasised that Poland not only develops RES, but also produces the components necessary for their operation.
We reduce supply chains, develop the so-called “local content”, i.e. domestic technologies, including the support for Polish experts and scientists. This is the foundation of our energy transition
- she added.
PGE investment in Żarnowiec
With a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, the PGE Group has launched the construction of a battery-based energy storage facility with the installed capacity of 263 MW and the storage potential of 900 MWh. The project is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027. The project has received the first electricity storage promise in Poland, it holds a connection agreement to the national power system and a 17-year contract under the capacity market, effective from 2029.
This is the first investment of this kind in our Group, responding to changes in the domestic energy sector and the increasing share of RES in the energy mix. Thereby, we are introducing Poland to a new era of the energy sector – modern, secure, and flexible
- said Dariusz Marzec, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.
Energy storage - the foundation of the modern energy sector
Energy storage systems are essential for integrating RES and enhancing the flexibility of the power system. The storage facility in Żarnowiec will be charged during periods of surplus production from RES and will feed energy into the grid during periods of increased demand - particularly important in regions such as Pomerania, where both strong sunshine and wind often occurs.
