Polish-Finnish talks on energy transition

18.02.2021

Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, and Deputy Minister, Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, took part in a meeting with the Finnish Ambassador to Poland, Mr Juha Ottman, during which they discussed energy and climate transformation. Talks concerned mainly the possibilities for bilateral cooperation between both countries in the context of climate policy and the role of nuclear energy in the European Union’s climate and energy policy.

Polsko-fińskie rozmowy o transformacji energetycznej

In the framework of the policy for climate neutrality, the Polish-Finnish cooperation areas include nuclear energy, offshore wind energy and modernisation of the heating network. All of these aspects are important elements of Poland's efforts to combat climate change, which is why we appreciate the cooperation with Finland, emphasised Minister Michał Kurtyka.

The Polish government adopted last October an update of the Polish Nuclear Energy Programme, which foresees launching 6 blocks of 6-9 GWe by 2043. These assumptions were also included in the Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 adopted in February by the Polish government.

As members of the European Union, we should work together to ensure the appropriate role of zero-carbon nuclear technologies in the EU’s energy and climate policy, said Minister Michał Kurtyka.

Poland has been cooperating with Finland for some time in the field of nuclear projects. One of the examples of such cooperation is the involvement of Polish subcontractors in the Finnish nuclear investments in Olkiluoto.

Another topic raised at the meeting was the “green” economic recovery – based on EU funds – which is to follow the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The energy and climate transformation is an important driving force in the Europe's strategy for recovering from the economic crisis, said Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.
