Polish-Icelandic talks on climate policy

08.11.2021

Matters relating to cooperation in the area of hydrogen, geothermal energy and CO2 emission reduction were the main topic of talks between Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, and María Erla Marelsdóttir, Ambassador of Iceland. The meeting took place on 4 November 2021 in Warsaw.

Polsko-islandzkie rozmowy o polityce klimatycznej

As emphasised by Deputy Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, Poland supports the implementation of climate goals and is aware of the need to transform the national economy towards a low-carbon one, as inaction in this respect would be eventually more expensive than making the necessary adjustments. However, he pointed out that such transition would require caution regarding the developments that could possibly impose a greater burden on the society, and the risk of increased energy poverty should already be adequately addressed at this stage.

Modernising the national energy system and reducing its carbon footprint is the best way to ensure the competitiveness of our economy and to mitigate the impact of climate policy on energy prices,

said Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

An exemplary solution for achieving climate neutrality and maintaining the competitiveness of Polish industry is the development of hydrogen economy. According to Polish Hydrogen Strategy until 2030 with an outlook until 2040, Poland has planned to have 2 GW of installation capacity to produce hydrogen and its derivatives from low-emission sources, processes and technologies, in particular electrolysers, by 2030. By 2030, Polish cities will gain 800 to 1,000 new hydrogen buses produced in Poland. Moreover, at least 32 hydrogen filling and storage stations and at least 5 hydrogen valleys are to be constructed.

I am very excited about the cooperation between LOTOS Group S.A. and the Icelandic Geothermal Resource Park (GRP) in the area of hydrogen production using the wealth of geothermal energy. This cooperation will certainly allow the implementation of initiatives contributing to the development of state-of-the-art technologies that will bring benefits both to the environment and to the economy,

Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński emphasised at the meeting.

The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the development of geothermal energy. Poland and Iceland already have experience in cooperation in this field, and as the Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński emphasised, due to the possibility of exchanging experiences, these efforts should be continued.
