Preparations for the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku - Deputy Minister Krzysztof Bolesta met with Ambassador Nargiz Gurbanova

Highlights

  • Azerbaijan will host the 13th World Urban Forum in May 2026
  • The event is an opportunity for a global discussion on climate goals, sustainable development of urban areas and cooperation in building climate-resilient and sustainable cities.
  • In autumn 2024, Azerbaijan held the Presidency and hosted the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29). During the global negotiations on greenhouse gas emission reductions, the Polish-Azerbaijani Economic Forum and an economic mission promoting Polish companies organized by the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Polish Embassy in Baku also took place.
  • Poland and Azerbaijan intend to continue their cooperation in the field of green technologies, including through the GreenEvo programme – a green technology accelerator.

During the meeting, Krzysztof Bolesta, Deputy Minister for Climate and the Environment, discussed both countries’ involvement in global climate negotiations with Nargiz Gurbanova, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Poland. Azerbaijan has invited Poland to join the Climate Coalition of Municipalities, which is being organised in Baku as part of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).

We were delighted to support three initiatives launched by the COP29 Presidency: The Global Commitment on Energy Storage and Grids, the Hydrogen Declaration and the Declaration on Water for Climate Action. We are also currently exploring the initiative "Multisectoral Action Pathways for Resilient and Healthy Cities", which we hope to join soon, in line with our national procedures

– said Deputy Minister Krzysztof Bolesta.

He also noted that during the last COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Poland was among the signatories of the Declaration on the Integrity of Information on Climate Change.

We view disinformation as a growing challenge that hinders the effective implementation of climate policy – both in Poland and globally. We would like to know whether Azerbaijan has also considered supporting this initiative. We also welcome the news that, on the initiative of Azerbaijan and the OECD, the PISA assessment will now include the skills needed to understand human impact on the climate and the consequences of climate change

– Krzysztof Bolesta said.

During the 13th World Urban Forum in May 2026 Poland will present the winning entries from the GreenEvo programme, which promotes innovative Polish green technologies. This is another event enabling contact between Polish and Azerbaijani companies interested in cooperation and the transfer of innovative technologies.

Current events in the Middle East are also having an impact on countries outside the region. The participants emphasised their commitment to working together to minimise the impact on Europe’s economy and energy security.
