The first new national park in Poland since 2001 will be officially established on the National Independence Day on 11 November 2025. Today the Sejm has passed the Act on the establishment of the Lower Oder Valley National Park. The park will cover more than 3,800 hectares of unique Międzyodrze area, including peatlands, floodplains and habitats for more than 200 bird species.
- The Lower Oder Valley National Park will be the first new national park in Poland since 24 years.
- The park will be located in Gryfino.
- The Act guarantees the maintenance of navigation on the Oder River, as well as the possibility of recreational fishing and culture fishing.
- The park is developed in cooperation with local authorities: Szczecin, the municipalities of Widuchowa and Kołbaskowo, the districts of Police and Gryfino and the regional parliament of the Zachodniopomorskie voivodship.
- Funding will be provided from the state budget and EU funds.
- The creation of the park will boost tourism, environmental education and local development.
This is a historic day for Polish nature. After more than two decades, we are developing a new national park - together with local communities, local authorities and experts
- said Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment.
The head office of the Lower Oder Valley National Park will be located in Gryfino, which emphasises the importance of local involvement in its creation and future functioning. The Act guarantees the maintenance of navigation on the Oder River, so that neither water transport nor recreation on the river will be restricted. Amateur fishing and culture fishing, i.e. traditional forms of fishing characteristic of the region, will be permitted within the park.
The park is developed in close cooperation with local and regional authorities, including the city of Szczecin, the municipalities of Widuchowa and Kołbaskowo, the districts of Police and Gryfino and the regional parliament of the Zachodniopomorskie voivodship. They all expressed support for the establishment of the Park. Funding will be provided from the state budget as well as from EU funds, enabling the implementation of conservation, education and infrastructure measures.
The Lower Oder Valley National Park protects one of the most valuable natural areas in Poland. It is the land of bogs, wet meadows, floodplains, lakes and a tangle of canals, mostly inaccessible to humans. The area is home for more than 200 bird species, including many protected and endangered species. Rare species of aquatic and marsh plants also occur here, as well as valuable non-forest habitats requiring active protection, including through mowing and grazing.
