The deposit-refund system has been launched

01.10.2025

On 1 October 2025, the deposit-refund system came into force. This is the biggest change in waste management in years - packaging with a deposit mark will gradually appear in shops throughout Poland.

baner deposit-refund system in Poland.

Key principles:

  • The deposit-return system will cover plastic bottles up to 3 litres and cans up to 1 litre (deposit PLN 0.5) and reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 litres (deposit PLN 1).
  • Deposit refunds will be available at any collection point without the need to show a receipt.
  • Collection points will be located in larger shops (over 200 m²), while smaller shops may operate them on a voluntary basis.
  • Packages must be intact and labelled – they should not be crushed.

Why we are introducing this system

The deposit-return system is intended to improve the environment and increase recycling. Thanks to it, bottles and cans will not end up in forests, parks or on pavements.

We are introducing the deposit-return system with citizens and our natural environment in mind. The benefits are clear – a cleaner environment and more raw materials returning to circulation,
– stressed the Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska.

Data from countries where the deposit-return system is already in place shows that over 90% of packaging covered by the deposit is returned to shops.

How to recognise packaging covered by a deposit-return system

The most important element is the uniform deposit symbol on the label – it indicates that the packaging can be returned, and the money refunded. If the symbol is present, the seller charges a deposit, and the consumer has the right to get it back.

System implementation and convenience for citizens

To ensure smooth implementation, products labelled with a deposit mark will appear gradually. Operators are also signing agreements with small shops to provide citizens with the widest possible access to collection points.

No receipt is required to return packaging, nor is it necessary to do so at the same shop where the purchase has been made. Collection will be carried out manually – at the checkout or customer service office – or via special machines. Those returning packaging are entitled to receive a cash deposit.
