Vice-Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński about the report “Green Railway – Climate, Energy, Transport”

Pursuing towards decreasing carbon footprint of the transport sector and electromobility capacity in Poland are the leitmotivs of the discussions during the premiere of the UN Global Compact Network Poland report entitled “Green Railway – Climate, Energy, Transport”. The event held on 25 October 2021 in the Ministry of Climate and Environment was attended by Vice-Minister „ Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

Wiceminister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński o raporcie „Zielona kolej – klimat, energetyka, transport”

As emphasized by Vice-Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński during the meeting, Poland strives to ensure optimum conditions for the railway sector in context of the EU climate policy.

The railway will play a significant role in pursing towards climate neutrality by 2050. It is one of the most environment friendly and energy efficient mean of transport. The railway sector noticed that the zero emission sources may act as an effective alternative for conventional solutions, which is demonstrated for example by the Green Railway Programme

– he explained.

In the course of the event, Vice-Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński participated in the “Green Railway – Green Economy” debate, during which he emphasized the role of RES in railway greening.

The plans and challenges faced by the railway sector are a great example of challenges faced by the economy as a whole

– noted the Vice-Minister.

Transport electrification is a good way to make railway green. It translates also into greater importance of decarbonised electricity for achievement of our climate objectives. In this respect, the 85% share of RES in railway transport in 2030 planned by PKP Energetyka is an impressive objective

– he added.

The Vice-Minister of Climate and Environment pointed also out at the stability of renewable energy sources.

We must supplement the missing 15% with clean energy, therefore the investments in RES technologies are extremely important. The focus is on energy storage technologies – to maximise the use of green energy

– he said.

Vice-Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński stressed that we are witnessing the technological race of green transport.

The technologies of zero emission transport compete with each other – for the name of the most economically efficient and environment friendly. We assume that within the next few years the costs of operation of zero emission transport will decrease

– he pointed out.

In the new transport reality, the railway will play a significant role due to its low environmental impact

– he summarised.

The “Sustainable development and green supply chain” is the subject of the second panel during the premiere of the “Green Railway – Climate, Energy, Transport” report. In the course of discussion, Vice-Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński stressed that transport has the greatest impact on carbon footprint of specific products.

The initiatives focusing on carbon footprint of products are of significance. The Polish and foreign companies make increasing efforts to demonstrate their environmental and social responsibility

– said the Vice-Minister.

Vice-Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński pointed out that the increasing number of Polish companies benefit from climate transformation.

These are frequently small enterprises that are the beneficiaries of transformation. They have specific knowledge and technologies to perform transformation. Making use of well-educated human resources and innovation present in the enterprise sector is also a great opportunity for Poland. This is why we need to fill this niche and provide the products necessary for transformation. The electromobility sector is a perfect example here. Poland is the leader in production of electric buses or lithium-ion batteries

– he noted.
