Vice-Minister Siarka at the 590 Congress

05.10.2021

The role of forests in CO2 sequestration in context of challenges related to climate change is the leitmotiv of presentation of the Vice-Minister of Climate and Environment, Edward Siarka, during the 590 Congress. The event was held on 5 October 2021 in Warsaw.

Wiceminister klimatu i środowiska Edward Siarka

As pointed out by Vice-Minister Siarka during the event, forests play an important role in carbon circulation in nature.

The atmospheric carbon from carbon dioxide is bonded and embedded in wood. Carbon dioxide in trees is assimilated by leaves and needles in a photosynthesis process

– explained the Vice-Minister.

Vice-Minister Siarka emphasized also that the forests in the national and international policy are perceived as the essential carbon dioxide absorbents.

The greatest amounts of carbon are accumulated in 100-years old tree stands. 1 ha of forest is able to sequestrate the amount of carbon released to air by a group of 200 people in 1 hour

– he said.

The Vice-Minister referred also to the publication of “Fit for 55” package containing the proposal of increasing the CO2 sequestration by the forests from 26 to 38 million of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent/year.

Greenhouse gas emission is to be reduced by 55% by 2030. The assumed higher sequestration target for the soil sector will be a great challenge

– stresses Vice-Minister Siarka.

According to Vice-Minister Siarka, forest management is a long-term planning and the effects of actions are visible after dozens or even hundreds of years.

Sequestration increase and simultaneous maintenance of forest sustainability and biodiversity is not possible in such limited timeframe

– he pointed out.
