Videoconference of EU Environment Ministers

24.06.2020

Initiatives under the European Green Deal, such as the Circular Economy Action Plan and the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, were the main topics of a video conference of EU environment ministers. The event, which took place on 23 June, was attended by Deputy Minister of Climate Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

During the meeting, ministers also discussed how to ensure a stable and forward-looking investment environment that generates green growth and jobs, thus keeping the EU on the right track towards the objective of achieving a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.

During the meeting, the Polish side presented its position on the European Green Deal, which, despite the crisis caused by COVID-19, remains for us an important course of action towards a sustainable and strong EU. Poland already supports investments that will generate growth in the short term and at the same time will support emission reductions. An additional €2 billion has been recently allocated for this purpose alone. Nevertheless, as the Deputy Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński stressed at the conference, the implementation of a green and fair transformation in unstable times will require to pay special attention to the social dimension of this process. The crisis affects many sectors and entire regions, and we must therefore pay particular attention in our anti-crisis measures so as not to create additional burdens for the poorest and most vulnerable citizens.

"We should explore all support options, including the ETS, which should be adapted to current and upcoming challenges, taking into account social and economic sensitivities. In this context, it is also important to work on the introduction of a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)" - said Deputy Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

Poland agrees with the European Commission that a circular economy has potential for growth and job creation. It also fosters resilience and creates conditions for a more sustainable Europe.

"The need for transformation should be used to boost Member States' economies, provide new jobs and promote European leadership in the development of sustainable technologies. But a low-carbon energy transformation should not be the only way out of the crisis. Not every Member State will be ready to cope with the additional burden on its economy, especially as even during times of prosperity transformation would be very costly for us" - concluded Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.
