Cooperation in the energy sector between Poland and Ukraine was discussed during the meeting of the Polish-Ukrainian working group for energy, held on 28 November 2022 by videoconference.

Videoconference of the Polish-Ukrainian Working Group for Energy

The meeting of the Polish-Ukrainian working group for energy was co-chaired on Polish side by Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska and on Ukrainian side by Jaroslav Demchenkov, Deputy Minister for Energy of Ukraine. Mateusz Berger, Polish Government Representative for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, and representatives of Polish and Ukrainian energy companies also attended the meeting.

The subject of discussion was, among others, the intensification of cooperation in the gas sector, including efforts to increase trade and create opportunities for the development of natural gas and oil supply infrastructure, as well as the implementation of the Khmelnitskaya-Rzeszów electricity interconnection project.

We understand the very difficult situation of Ukraine's energy sector resulting from Russian military aggression and we are ready to provide support to Ukraine in diversifying its energy supply sources and ensuring energy security,

stated Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska.

According to the group's co-chairs, in the face of ongoing Russian aggressive actions aimed at destroying Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, the most urgent task now is to rebuild the energy sector in Ukraine. This is a necessity to ensure the living conditions of the civilian population during winter and the functioning of the economy. The realisation of the Khmelnitskaya - Rzeszów electricity interconnection will contribute to strengthening energy security and resilience in Europe.

We are supporting Ukraine in this regard by supplying the necessary equipment for the reconstruction of energy connections in Ukraine under the coordination of the Governmental Strategic Reserves Agency. We are also seeking support for Ukraine in the European Union, international forums and international financial institutions,

said Deputy Minister Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska.

Talks in the extractive gas sector, gas storage in Ukraine or the construction of gas and oil transmission infrastructure will continue at expert level, i.e. Polish and Ukrainian energy companies.

Joint efforts to implement investment projects in the electricity and gas sectors are key to realising the energy independence of both our countries,

noted Deputy Minister Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska.

Updates were also exchanged on plans to develop energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and the development of the hydrogen economy, as well as cooperation in nuclear energy sector. Cooperation in these areas has great potential for development.

Ukraine has many years of experience in the operation of nuclear power plants, which can be the basis for further specialised cooperation between industry communities in this area.

It was also agreed to exchange information and best practices on nuclear safety and regulatory aspects in the nuclear power sector as soon as conditions allow. Given the current situation in Ukraine, the meeting also raised questions about the threats to nuclear safety caused by Russian military aggression against Ukraine's infrastructure and joint activities to draw international attention to Russian actions against energy security.
