Legal and Treaty Department

The Legal and Treaty Department carries out the tasks of the Minister of Foreign Affairs relating to the conclusion of international agreements by the Republic of Poland.

It is involved in the negotiations of bilateral and multilateral treaties, keeps the treaty archives and takes measures associated with exercising the function of a depositary of international agreements by the Republic of Poland. The Department also prepares legal opinions in the field of public international law. It is involved in the work of international organizations and other institutions charged with the codification and development of international law. It coordinates the Ministry’s efforts to restitute cultural heritage.

The Legal and Treaty Department is also responsible for the legal representation of the Republic of Poland before international bodies in the field of human rights and for legal aspect of the cooperation with those bodies.
