Poland in the EU

We are deeply concerned about the current situation in Georgia. International observers reported violations during the election campaign as well as on election day.

Ten weeks before the start of the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union, Agnieszka Bartol, secretary of state at the Prime Minister's Office, has taken over as head of the Permanent Representation to the EU.

At the European Council summit, which took place in Brussels on 18 October, Prime Minister Donald Tusk presented the Polish point of view on migration. Faced with growing challenges on the Union's eastern border, the leaders expressed solidarity with Poland. The European Council unanimously adopted conclusions on migration, which read that no country, including Russia and Belarus, can abuse values such as the right to asylum. Poland is to make “autonomous decisions.”

On 8 October, the Council, with a strong support from Poland, decided to establish a new sanctions regime against those involved in and supporting Russia's destabilising actions worldwide.

The analysis and conclusions of Mario Draghi's report were the main topics discussed at the September session of the Council on Competitiveness (COMPET), attended by Deputy Minister of Development and Technology Ignacy Niemczycki.

Edyta Demby-Siwek, president of the Polish Patent Office, has been appointed deputy executive director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The office manages EU trademarks and industrial designs.

A meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries (AGRIFISH) in Brussels was devoted to important agricultural and fisheries issues. The Polish delegation was led by Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Czeslaw Siekierski.

The main topic of the special European Council meeting was the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework, including support for Ukraine. Poland was represented by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

During the European Council, EU leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East, Russian aggression against Ukraine, and migration issues. The conversation also focused on the EU budget and economic issues. On the sidelines of the European Council, a Euro summit was held.
