More than just radiation monitoring - talks held by the PAA delegation in Germany

30.06.2026

A delegation of experts from the National Atomic Energy Agency was in Germany on a bilateral visit. Discussions with representatives of the German nuclear regulatory authority focused, among other things, on cooperation and the exchange of experiences regarding the development of radiation monitoring.

Meeting participants.

The meeting between Polish experts and representatives of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (German nuclear regulatory authority) focused primarily on the exchange of information and experiences regarding radiation monitoring.

A key part of the visit was the opportunity to learn about the operations of the UDOII underground low-background laboratory, which is used by German Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The possibility of utilizing this facility as part of bilateral cooperation with Germany was discussed.

Poland currently does not have a laboratory of this kind that could serve as a calibration laboratory for radioactivity and dosimetry measuring  equipment, used in environmental measurements.

In addition, there are plans to continue exchanging expertise with Germany, including in the area of radiation monitoring at sea. Poland is developing its capabilities in this area due to the site of the country’s first nuclear power plant on the coast.

Currently, 65 monitoring stations are operational as part of the early warning system for radioactive contamination. All of them are located on land. Their readings can be tracked in real time on the website of the National Atomic Energy Agency at the following link: https://monitoring.paa.gov.pl/maps-portal/

As part of the implementation of the Polish Nuclear Power Program, this system is to be systematically expanded. It is planned for least 145 monitoring stations to be operational in Poland by 2033.
