09.03.2026

The National Atomic Energy Agency is participating in the Artemis review mission, which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its experts are launching in Poland. The mission focuses on the safe and responsible management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. The Artemis mission begins on March 9 and will last until March 17.

Artemis

– Participation in this mission is particularly important for the National Atomic Energy Agency. In recent years, Poland has made significant efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework in preparation for the development of a nuclear energy program and the long-term management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel – said Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, during the mission's opening ceremony. He emphasized that the development of nuclear energy is linked to a responsible approach to the final phase of the fuel cycle.

Foreign experts participating in the mission were welcomed by Wojciech Wrochna, Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure. In addition to the National Atomic Energy Agency, the Radioactive Waste Management Plant and the Ministry of Energy, which hosts the mission, are also participating.

During the review, the mission experts will review, among other things, issues related to government policy, including the organizational, technical, and financial aspects of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management.

As a result of the review, experts will be able to present their recommendations, suggestions, and best practices that will improve the organization and approach to issues related to radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management. This is the second Artemis mission in Poland. The previous one took place in 2017.
