Nuclear safety and the changing environment-a delegation from the PAA at the ENSREG conference

17.06.2026

A delegation from the National Atomic Energy Agency participated in the 8th ENSREG (European Nuclear Safety Regulatory Group) conference in Brussels. The conference, which is held every two years, provides an opportunity to discuss the current situation and challenges in the field of nuclear safety.

The meeting, which took place in Brussels, was attended by Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, and Iga Pocztarek-Tofil, director of the Agency’s  Policy and International Cooperation Bureau.

This year’s conference is dedicated to the regulatory response to the changing technological and political landscape, as well as to evolving public expectations regarding the use of nuclear energy, not only in EU member states but also worldwide. Iga Pocztarek-Tofil, among others, participated in the preparation of the program as part of the steering committee’s work.

In the discussions, on the one hand, expectations were raised for increased efficiency in the work of nuclear regulatory authorities, while on the other hand, it was emphasized that nuclear safety must remain the top priority and that regulatory decisions must be based on technical and scientific analyses. Despite the changing environment, safety standards remain unchanged; however, even greater cooperation among all stakeholders in the nuclear sector and even faster anticipation of events are expected. A separate panel was devoted to the safety of nuclear facilities in the context of armed conflicts.

ENSREG is a group that brings together nuclear regulatory authorities from European Union member states. Representatives of the European Commission also participate in the Group’s work. The Group serves in an advisory capacity to the European Commission.

The purpose of ENSREG is to facilitate cooperation and the exchange of information among EU member states on issues related to nuclear safety, radiation protection, and radioactive waste management. ENSREG also conducts peer reviews of nuclear safety at nuclear facilities.
