PAA participation in the ENSREG meeting in Brussels
27.03.2026
A delegation from the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) attended the plenary meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulatory Group (ENSREG) in Brussels. Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the PAA, and Iga Pocztarek-Tofil, Director of the PAA Policy and International Cooperation Bureau, participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, current issues related to nuclear safety and radiological protection in the EU were discussed.
A significant discussion took place on the topic of periodic topical peer review of nuclear facilities (TPR). Challenges identified in the last review regarding fire protection were discussed, as well as the preparation and selection of the scope of the next review (TPR III). The decision regarding the next review will be made during the next ENSREG plenary meeting.
Another important topic was the proposal to develop a mechanism for regulatory advisory missions to support countries planning to build new nuclear facilities. The discussion focused on whether experiences from stress test missions conducted in third countries could be leveraged for new installations being built in Europe. Work on this mechanism is expected to continue.
Participants also exchanged views on the safety of nuclear facilities in the context of armed conflicts. They also discussed cooperation between European regulatory authorities in the context of plans for the implementation of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the EU.
ENSREG is a group of nuclear regulatory authorities from European Union member states and representatives of the European Commission. It serves as an advisory body and provides a platform for cooperation, exchange of experiences, and joint reviews in the areas of nuclear safety, radiation protection, and radioactive waste management.
