Pilot School for Regulating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Warsaw
25.08.2025
A pilot school for regulating small modular reactors (SMRs) has begun in Warsaw. The National Atomic Energy Agency is hosting the event, which is organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
As part of the school, dozens of representatives of nuclear regulatory authorities from around the world will spend two weeks exchanging information and exploring issues related to small modular reactor nuclear technologies.
- More and more countries are looking into the possibility of using small modular reactors. As the Polish nuclear regulatory authority, we are intensively preparing to analyze the documentation of such nuclear facilities in terms of nuclear safety and radiation protection - says Andrzej Głowacki. The President of the PAA emphasizes the importance of exchanging information with other regulators and analyzing the challenges that this new technology poses for regulatory authorities.
The aim of the school is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and tools for the safe implementation of SMR technology, including the use of the experience of countries already working in this area.
Among the topics to be discussed in Warsaw over the next two weeks are the application of IAEA safety standards to small nuclear reactors and case studies on the application and adaptation of national regulatory frameworks to small modular reactors. Examples of countries planning to change their regulatory frameworks to prepare for the implementation of SMR technology will also be discussed. A comprehensive discussion of key technical issues related to this technology is also planned, along with practical exercises for participants and a discussion of the challenges associated with the licensing process, including safety analyses.
