Poland and Canada are strengthening their cooperation on nuclear technology oversight
28.09.2026
On the sidelines of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, an administrative arrangement was signed between the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). It concerns cooperation in the oversight of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The agreement between the Polish and Canadian nuclear regulatory authorities was concluded to ensure the effective implementation of the provisions of the agreement for co-operation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, signed between Poland and Canada in January 2025. The agreement establishes a framework enabling entities from both countries to exchange and transfer technologies involving ionizing radiation, and the arrangement just concluded specifies the government agencies that will be responsible for implementing and administering the agreement with regard to nuclear safety oversight. It marks the beginning of the next practical phase of cooperation, which involves overseeing the implementation of the main agreement regarding the use of nuclear technologies and materials in Poland.
Cooperation between the Polish and Canadian regulatory authorities also includes the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of nuclear regulation and safety. Currently, three experts from the National Atomic Energy Agency are participating in an inspection conducted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site, i.e., the construction site of the first SMR reactor in the G7 countries. The visit provides an opportunity for PAA staff to build their expertise regarding regulatory oversight of the construction of the BWRX-300 reactor.
