Andrzej Głowacki, President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, participated in the "DEPLOY SMR Workshop,” which took place in Istanbul. The event focused, among other things, on the development of industrial applications for small modular reactors (SMRs) and the conditions for their implementation.
The event was organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, in collaboration with the Turkish government. The two-day regional workshop concentrated on SMR issues and industrial competitiveness.
One of the key items on the agenda was a session devoted to regulations, licensing processes, and the siting of nuclear facilities. The panel featured Andrzej Głowacki, President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, along with representatives from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Turkish nuclear regulatory authority. The panel discussion focused on harmonizing approaches to SMR licensing and addressing issues of safety, emergency planning zones (EPZs), and public perception in the context of locating reactors within or near industrial clusters.
The participation of the President of the PAA in the workshop provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge on regulatory frameworks, nuclear safety, and the challenges associated with the implementation of new nuclear technologies. The event’s programme also included discussions on financing models, public policy instruments, and international cooperation.
