"We are here together in the E5 format to confirm that our countries will safeguard European and transatlantic unity," said Prime Minister Donald Tusk after a meeting in Berlin with the leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy. The future of Europe, Ukraine and the entire Western world will depend on the ability to preserve that unity. Poland will act consistently to strengthen cooperation among the allies. Prime Minister Donald Tusk also drew attention to the particular role of the eastern-flank countries and announced measures to ensure their full representation in all cooperation formats concerning the security and future of the region.

E5 in Berlin

Prime Minister Donald Tusk took part in the meeting of the E5 Group leaders in Berlin. The talks covered, among other things, preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, the prospects for achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine, and cooperation between Europe's defence industries.

“Poland has had, and will have, no doubt whatsoever that the future of Europe, of the Western world and of Ukraine, at this moment so dramatic for it, will depend on how far we preserve European and transatlantic unity,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk after the meeting of the E5 Group leaders.

The head of government stressed that Poland will act consistently to maintain the unity of Europe and transatlantic cooperation.

“We will protect European unity, both during the war on Ukraine's behalf and in its confrontation with Russia. We will protect the transatlantic bond, even if some politicians do not always appreciate the importance of transatlantic ties,” announced Donald Tusk.

The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of the eastern-flank countries for preserving Europe's security. He announced measures to ensure their full representation in all cooperation formats concerning the security and future of the region.

“Without Poland, without the Scandinavian countries, without the Baltic states, without Romania, it will be difficult to achieve anything in this civilisational confrontation, this confrontation with aggressive eastern neighbours,” said the Prime Minister.

Poland is already contributing to the strengthening of European security, as evidenced by its record defence spending, currently at almost 7 per cent of GDP. The Prime Minister called on NATO leaders to put more effort into building the defence capabilities of Europe and of their own countries, if they take their commitments seriously.

Moreover, tomorrow the Ukraine Recovery Conference will open in Gdańsk, with the participation of numerous leaders, diplomats and companies. This is the practical dimension of Poland's and Europe's support for a fighting Ukraine.

“Regardless of various developments, I will hold it as planned. It will be another contribution by Poland and Europe to the rebuilding of Ukraine, help for Ukraine today and the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war,” noted the Prime Minister.

The E5 Group comprises the European countries engaged in supporting Ukraine and strengthening the security of the region and the world: Poland, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy. Today's meeting was hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
