Head of the Polish Government after Meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister: Our Countries Understand Perfectly Well the Threat That Russian Imperialism Poses to World Peace

22.03.2023

Almost a year has passed since Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Brussels. The topic of discussion at the time was Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Today, the leaders of the countries met again. They continued on the topic of the current situation in Ukraine and the multifaceted support for the country in its fight against the Russian aggressor. The visit of the Japanese Prime Minister was also an opportunity to discuss the prospects for the development of Polish-Japanese cooperation, in particular in terms of the economy and investments.

Poland and Japan Consider Russian Aggression a Serious Threat to the Global Order

“We are witnessing the birth of a new geopolitical order. The security of Japan and Poland has suddenly become a matter that needs to be discussed with regard to threats in Asia and in Europe at the same time,” the Prime Minister said after his talks with the Japanese Prime Minister.

The Head of Government indicated that countries that have similar beliefs about peace, stability and freedom must work very closely together. He announced that at the forthcoming European Council summit, he would emphasise Japan's role in restoring stability in our region and around the world. At the same time, he thanked the Japanese Prime Minster for his visit to Kyiv, because, as he stressed, it clearly proves and symbolises his support for Ukraine's ambitions, for its plans to maintain sovereignty and territorial integrity, to defend freedom and democracy.

The Japanese Prime Minister expressed his deep gratitude and respect for Poland, which supports Ukraine militarily and humanely, standing on the front line. At the same time, he informed that due to the increasing burden on Poland due to Russia's prolonged aggression against Ukraine, Japan has decided to give special treatment to Poland as a recipient of official development assistance.

Economic, Business and Investment Cooperation Is Flourishing

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki emphasised the good relations between our countries also in terms of economic, investment and infrastructure cooperation. He recalled that he recently attended the opening of another high-tech investment by a Japanese company in Poland.

At the same time, he thanked the Prime Minister of Japan for being so strongly involved in security matters as well. “This is extremely important to us. I am glad that Poland and Japan are strengthening their ties of friendship and cooperation,” he noted.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pointed out that in the field of security, Poland and Japan have agreed to further increase their cooperation in a number of areas such as hardware, cyberspace, space and telecommunications – based on the memorandum on defence cooperation signed last February.

Japan is one of Poland's most important political and economic partners in the Asia-Pacific region. In February 2015, our relationship was taken to the level of Strategic Partnership. There are currently more than 350 Japanese companies operating in Poland – mainly in the manufacturing sector.

“We would like to further strengthen cooperation in new areas such as high-temperature gas-cooled reactors and clean coal and hydrogen technologies,” the Japanese Prime Minister concluded.
