Meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the Czech Prime Minister

22.02.2023

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki held talks in Warsaw with the head of the Czech government, Petr Fiala. The leaders discussed bilateral issues and security measures in Europe. The conversation also concerned the prospects for further tightening of the sanctions regime – currently, there are ongoing works on the 10th package of sanctions against Russia and Belarus. The Polish and Czech leaders met at the History Meeting House, where they visited an exhibition of selected photographs by photographer Chris Niedenthal.

Cooperation between Poland and the Czech Republic

Poland and the Czech Republic are actively involved in a number of initiatives to ensure security in Europe, in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

On 15 March 2022, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczynski and Prime Minister Petr Fiala, together with the then Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša, were the first European leaders to visit Kyiv after Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine, where they met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This sent a clear message to the international community and called for joint action to ensure the security of Ukraine and Europe.

We are also developing intensive bilateral cooperation with the Czech Republic. Polish-Czech intergovernmental consultations chaired by the Prime Ministers are organised.

Another visit by the Czech Prime Minister

Prime Minister Petr Fiala is visiting Poland for the third time. He previously met with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw in April 2022, and in Karpacz in September 2022 on the occasion of the Economic Forum. He has served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic since 28 November 2021.

Polish diplomacy for security in the region

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is continuing his intensive diplomatic efforts to strengthen the commitment to the security of our region, including by supporting Ukraine. Our neighbours are fighting for their freedom, but also for ours. The future of the whole of Europe depends on their victory.

The head of the Polish government spoke on the subject of European security at the Royal Castle in Warsaw with the President of the United States of America, Joseph R. Biden. He also addressed this issue at the 59th Munich Security Conference and during the special meeting of the European Council.

In addition, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki recently held talks with – among others – the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Kurdistan's President Nechirvan Idris Barzani and the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko.
