Meeting between the Head of the Polish Government and the Prime Minister of Japan

24.03.2022

The situation in Ukraine was the main topic discussed during today’s meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida in Brussels. This is the second meeting between the two Prime Ministers to have taken place recently. The Prime Ministers discussed the further political and economic steps which should be taken in response to the Russian aggression. The Head of the Government called for firm and consistent sanctions aimed at convincing the Russian aggressor to end the war. The meeting was yet another element of diplomatic actions taken by the Prime Minister to build global solidarity with Ukraine and a firm attitude of the entire world towards the Russian aggression.

Spotkanie z premierem Japonii.

An unequivocal position of Poland and Japan with respect to the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Poland appreciates the strong support expressed by Japan for actions aimed at stopping the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Much like Poland, Japan sees the Russian aggression as a serious threat for world order.

Prime Minister Morawiecki stated that he appreciates the decision taken by many Japanese companies to suspend their activities in or exports to the Russian market. The Head of the Polish Government also stressed that it is necessary to take further steps. Both leaders agreed that we must remain united and keep deterring Russia by isolating it on the international stage.

Sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine

During the meeting, Prime Minister Morawiecki emphasised that Poland encourages taking firm steps aimed at breaking free from importing energy resources – coal, oil and gas – from Russia. Of particular importance is imposition of sanctions to deprive Russia of the supply of money to finance the war.

The Prime Minister also stressed that Ukraine still needs our support in all respects, including in terms of support for its defensive capabilities and provision of humanitarian aid. He emphasised that Ukraine must not lose its defensive capabilities, and any hesitation on our part will be used by the aggressor.

The Head of the Polish Government also referred to the role of maintaining contact with Ukraine at the highest level, in the context of the recent meeting of the Prime Ministers of Slovenia and the Czech Republic with Ukrainian authorities in Kyiv and the speech given by President Zelenskyy in the Japanese Parliament. The Prime Minister stressed the need to prepare for assisting Ukraine in post-war reconstruction and supporting the future actions taken by Kiyv in this regard.
