MP Jerzy Wilk as a patron of the Southern Bridge

25.10.2021

The construction of a shipping channel through the Vistula Spit, which will connect the Gulf of Gdansk with the Vistula Lagoon, is underway. Thanks to this, Poland will no longer have to ask Russia for permission to enter the Lagoon. And this is the only way to get to the ports in Elblag, Frombork or Tolkmicko. One of the two crossings over the Vistula Spit – the Southern Bridge – was named after Jerzy Wilk, MP, who was an advocate for the construction of the canal. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński.

"Jerzy Wilk proved with his life that one can do a lot for one’s home country and land, be active and serve others,” emphasised Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński. "If we want to immortalize his memory today, it is because he was good in the broadest sense of the word. He was kind, not only to his loved ones, but also to his compatriots and to people in general,” he added. As the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out, Jerzy Wilk went down in the history of the Elbląg land, and through this land, in the history of our homeland.

The Southern Bridge is one of two bridges over the shipping channel connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdansk. It can already be used by drivers since 25 June 2021. The bridge is one of the longest of its kind in Poland. Its length is over 60 metres.

The construction of a canal across the Vistula Spit is in progress. Thanks to this investment, ferries as well as cruise and cargo ships will be able to enter the Vistula Lagoon. Thus, the accessibility of the region and trade exchange will increase.

Already in 2022, ships up to 85 m long and with a draught of up to 2 m will be able to enter the Vistula Lagoon through the Spit canal. Ultimately, after the completion of the entire investment, vessels up to 100 m long, 20 m wide and with a draught of up to 4.5 m (single-hull vessels) and 180 m long (a push-boat plus two barges, with the same maximum width and draught) will be able to enter the Vistula Lagoon from the Gulf of Gdańsk.
