Nothing About Ukraine Without Ukraine, and Nothing About Europe Without Europe

13.08.2025

Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that during a meeting of European leaders with U.S. President Donald Trump, the American leader heard a unified position from European countries regarding talks on Ukraine: "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, and nothing about Europe without Europe.” At the same time, the head of government appealed to President Karol Nawrocki for cooperation on security and foreign policy matters, stressing that the national interest requires such cooperation. The Prime Minister's meeting with the President will take place tomorrow at noon.

Poland’s Role in Euro-American Talks

Prime Minister Tusk assessed that Friday’s planned meeting in Alaska between Trump and Putin will most likely not bring a final resolution, but may be the first step toward relatively quick decisions on a ceasefire.

“It is very important that President Trump heard today a unified European position. It corresponds to what Poland wants,” said the Prime Minister.

He stressed that the Polish stance guides other European countries in determining the direction of talks on Ukraine. The most crucial aspect is rejecting Russia’s demands to redraw borders for its neighbors.

“The point is to ensure that during peace talks no one entertains the idea of recognizing Russia’s right to territories seized by force—through aggression and violations of international agreements,” explained the Prime Minister.

President Trump, Tusk noted, heard clearly today: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, and nothing about Europe without Europe. According to the Prime Minister, the U.S. leader expressed understanding for the European position. At the Alaska talks, there should also be no agreements concerning any potential territorial exchanges or border changes in Ukraine.

Three Meetings on Ukraine

On the issue of U.S.–Russia talks regarding Kyiv, three meetings were held today.

The first—and most important—was a meeting in a narrow format between European leaders and President Zelensky, attended by Prime Minister Tusk. This meeting produced the common stance for the Trump–Putin talks.

The second was a teleconference with the U.S. President and Ukraine, where the joint European position was presented. At the request of the United States—in line with American tradition—the talks took place at the presidential level, which meant Poland was represented by President Karol Nawrocki. He had previously received a special position on the matter, adopted by the government at the last Council of Ministers meeting.

“The constitutional task of the government is to conduct foreign policy, and when the President represents Poland, he should present the position developed by the government,” stressed Donald Tusk.

On matters of security and foreign policy, the government and the President—regardless of political conflicts—must cooperate, as the Polish national interest requires it.

In this context, the Prime Minister announced that tomorrow at 12:00 he will meet with President Nawrocki.

“I am counting on full understanding—if not of my arguments, then of the national interest. In these turbulent times, we must take Poland’s security issues seriously—in line with the Constitution, the national interest, and common sense. A state with an incoherent foreign policy would be weaker on the international stage,” emphasized the head of government.

The third meeting, with the participation of more than 30 leaders from around the world—including Prime Minister Tusk—concerned discussions on how allies could positively influence the course of U.S.–Russia negotiations.

Poland Must Remain United on Ukraine

In the current difficult period marked by the Russian–Ukrainian war, Poland must maintain a unified stance on Ukraine. No outside actor should be able to play Polish institutions or leading politicians against one another.

“Poles are on Ukraine’s side. Only an idiot or a traitor could root for Russia in this conflict. It is not about love for Ukraine, but about the obvious sense of our own national interest,” explained the Prime Minister.

The situation is serious, as Russia has long sought to drive a wedge between Poles and Ukrainians. It often recruits Ukrainian or Belarusian citizens to carry out acts of sabotage in Poland. Russia is behind attempts to stir up anti-Polish sentiment in Ukraine and anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland.

Poland as Europe’s Fastest-Growing Economy

Prime Minister Tusk also referred today to data published by the Central Statistical Office on Poland’s GDP for the second quarter of 2025. During this period, the economy grew by 3.4%, compared to 3.2% in the previous quarter.

“We have reason for satisfaction. Poland has the fastest economic growth in Europe. In these difficult times, when the largest European economies are in the red, the fact that Poland ranks first is truly a very good result,” said Donald Tusk.

Poland’s strong economic performance also strengthens its hand in international politics, as it bolsters the country’s power and standing.
