On the role of Poland and Silesia in the reconstruction of Ukraine at the 5th Silesian Deal Programme Conference
25.04.2022
We are all concentrating on aid efforts for Ukraine: arms supplies and humanitarian aid. However, we should already start developing future programmes for our eastern neighbour. Certainly, Silesia, as a region with enormous potential, will play a significant role in the efforts to rebuild Ukraine. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Minister of Family and Social Policy Marlena Maląg and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology Grzegorz Piechowiak discussed this issue during the 5th Silesian Deal Programme Conference.
“Silesia will play a huge role because we have excellent, experienced people: managers, engineers, industrialists,” emphasised the Prime Minister. “And these are the people whose vision will be greatly needed in work for Ukraine.”
Polish-Ukrainian support
The Polish PM stressed that the aid coming from Poland should not be considered only as costs incurred by the state budget. Polish entrepreneurs benefit when Ukrainian citizens take up jobs. Polish economy gains thanks to mediating trade with Ukraine. But, above all, we should remember that Ukraine is fighting for the sovereignty of the whole of Europe.
“In Ukraine, they are also fighting for our security and freedom. In turn, those who have already arrived in the country are working for the Polish economy,” pointed out the PM.
Poland’s successful efforts on behalf of Ukraine
Poland is successfully providing aid to Ukraine and actively participating in the development of sanctions against Russia. Millions of people fleeing war in Ukraine have already found refuge in our country. We are all helping: the government, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and Poles, who have opened their hearts and doors to welcome refugees under their roofs. Moreover, the government has drafted a special law to support both Ukrainians and the individuals who help them.
On Saturday, the PMs of Poland and Ukraine signed a memorandum between our countries on strengthening the railway cooperation. This is in response to the blockade of Ukrainian ports by the Russian aggressor. The economies of both countries will benefit from this.
“I am convinced that Polish-Ukrainian cooperation and friendship will be the foundation of future Europe and peace in future Europe,” stressed the Polish PM.
