Only a United West Can Push Russia Toward Peace

06.01.2026

"We must keep applying strong pressure on Russia, including through sanctions, to make it take peace efforts seriously,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after the conclusion of international talks of the so-called Coalition of the Willing. Leaders gathered in Paris discussed security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire or a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Poland's role in this process will be fundamental. The Prime Minister announced that Poland will be among the four countries that will decide what actions will be taken after the war ends. As he explained, Poland will be the leading state in terms of logistical and organizational matters. At the same time, the head of government once again ruled out the presence of Polish soldiers in Ukraine. Leaders of the Coalition of the Willing adopted the Paris Declaration today, confirming their intent to pursue Euro-American cooperation.

Coalition of the Willing Summit Paris

Only a united Western stance can stop Russia

The countries forming the Coalition of the Willing support Kyiv with the aim of ending the Russo-Ukrainian war. In Paris, among others, leaders of European states met along with U.S. special envoys S. Witkoff and J. Kushner, who are conducting negotiations with the Ukrainian side and, together with the Europeans, preparing peace in Ukraine.

“Of course, it is too early to announce overly optimistic statements. Peace requires, above all, a positive decision by the aggressor to end military operations,” Donald Tusk emphasized after the meeting in Paris.

What is needed now is the gradual alignment of positions among the United States, the European Union, and other states forming the Coalition of the Willing, such as Canada, Turkey, and Norway.

“With each week we are getting closer to concrete solutions. Today we discussed more detailed issues already accepted by Washington regarding security guarantees and the role of individual states. And this looks truly promising,” the Prime Minister assessed.

However, to push Russia toward peace, constant pressure on Moscow is necessary.

“We welcomed with great hope President Trump’s declaration and the readiness expressed by participants in today’s meeting to exert pressure on Russia, including through sanctions if necessary. Moscow must be compelled to finally sit down seriously at the table and talk about the conditions for peace,” the head of government said.

If that can be achieved, Poland’s role in securing the actions of countries supporting Ukraine after the war will be fundamental.

“Each task has its national leader, and among the four states that will decide how to act after the war ends, Poland will take the lead in logistical and organizational matters,” the Prime Minister said.

At the same time, Poland’s partners do not expect Polish troops to be deployed in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister also assessed that far-reaching American declarations regarding U.S. participation in security guarantees and in Ukraine’s reconstruction provide cautious grounds for optimism.

Warsaw as a model of economic development for Kyiv

According to the United States, Ukraine can look to Poland as an example when rebuilding its economy after the end of hostilities.

“I was pleased to hear the American side encourage Ukraine and strengthen its confidence by saying that Poland is a model example of how to recover from an economic collapse by implementing ambitious reforms and pursuing good policy over many years,” the Prime Minister noted.

He also quoted President Trump’s envoy J. Kushner, who said Ukraine has a chance to achieve the kind of success Poland has achieved.

“It reminds me of the message I delivered in my New Year’s address to Europeans: ‘Be like Poland.’ Roughly the same thing was repeated today by the Americans. It is a source of satisfaction that it is not only us who see the great and positive path our country has taken,” Donald Tusk emphasized.

At the same time, the Prime Minister informed that he would discuss Poland’s role in the peace process with President Karol Nawrocki. The meeting is expected to take place later this week.

Leaders of the Coalition of the Willing adopted the Paris Declaration today, confirming the will for Euro–American cooperation to ensure Ukraine’s security and its reconstruction after the war.
