PM Tusk in Tokyo: Poland and Japan Forge Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

15.04.2026

Warsaw and Tokyo have elevated their relationship to the highest level, a comprehensive strategic partnership. "We will do everything possible to facilitate cooperation and the operations of Polish companies in Japan and Japanese companies in Poland. Our countries are capable of a great story," said Prime Minister Donald Tusk during his visit to Tokyo. By joining the ranks of the world's wealthiest economies, Poland is cementing its position as an equal partner for Japan. In this way, the aspirations of many generations of Poles, for whom the Land of the Rising Sun has been a symbol of success and modernity, are finally being fulfilled. Warsaw and Tokyo also point to the growing importance of geopolitical cooperation: both states are to play a stabilising role in their regions and in the world.

Poland and Japan at a New Level of Strategic Cooperation

Warsaw and Tokyo are entering the highest level of cooperation, extending it to key areas, from politics and the economy to security, investment, trade, agriculture, the space sector, and science.

"We have elevated Polish-Japanese relations to a strategic, comprehensive partnership. We will do everything possible to facilitate cooperation and the operations of Polish companies in Japan and Japanese companies in Poland," Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized, following his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

In 2026, Poland will participate in the G20 summit, the exclusive club of the world's 20 largest economies, further cementing its standing in its relationship with Japan.

"Today, having become an undisputed leader in economic growth and having leapt forward several epochs in our civilisational development, we can say with pride that we stand as equal partners with Japan," the Prime Minister stressed.

This is a moment in which the hopes of many generations of Poles are being fulfilled.

"When I was a very young man, the Polish dream was to become a second Japan. For several generations of Poles, you were a symbol of success, modernity, and high aspirations," the Prime Minister recalled.

The deepening of Polish-Japanese cooperation will open new prospects for the development of both states.

Warsaw and Tokyo Deepen Economic, Technological and Security Cooperation

The strategic collaboration between Warsaw and Tokyo will span many areas of economic and social life. During the visit, key agreements and documents were signed, including a social security agreement, a memorandum of cooperation in agriculture, and a joint statement on potential civilian cooperation in the space sector.

"The scope of our cooperation is truly remarkable. I also discussed this with representatives of the Japanese business community. This cooperation spans from space to beef, from nuclear energy to high-speed rail, from cybersecurity to artificial intelligence," Donald Tusk said.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also expressed her commitment to deepening the relationship between Poland and Japan.

"We have decided to further strengthen our cooperation across many areas, including in the field of security, and the defence industry in particular," the Japanese Prime Minister noted.

The previous day, the Prime Minister met at the Polish Embassy with Japanese parliamentarians, business representatives, and Polish studies students.

"Interest in Poland is enormous. The perception of Poland as the most exciting investment market and a success story has truly taken hold here," the Prime Minister stressed.

The Prime Minister announced that Poland will spend more on infrastructure investment and energy than any other country in Europe.

"Poland alone will invest nearly €250 billion in energy over the next ten years. We have truly become an economic powerhouse of Europe. We also have one of the strongest armies on the continent, and in these difficult times we are among the safest places in the world," PM Donald Tusk assessed.

The development of strategic cooperation between Poland and Japan will create new prospects in the areas of the economy, technology, and security for both states.
