Poland and France Seal Historic Partnership in Gdańsk

20.04.2026

The first Polish-French intergovernmental summit took place in Gdańsk, co-chaired by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Emmanuel Macron. "We have elevated our relations to the highest level," the Prime Minister assessed. In difficult geopolitical times, predictability, loyalty, and solidarity between states take on particular importance. That is why the stability of Polish-French relations and their tangible outcomes matter. Poland and France cooperate in areas including energy, security, defence, and the space sector. France is also one of Poland's key partners in the context of protecting the eastern border and supporting Ukraine. The meeting of the two governments in Gdańsk is part of the implementation of the Treaty on Enhanced Cooperation and Friendship between Warsaw and Paris, signed on 9 May 2025 in Nancy. 20 April has been established as Polish-French Friendship Day.

Poland and France together for European security

Warsaw and Paris share a closely aligned stance on the geopolitical situation, highlighting its growing instability, particularly in the strategic dimension.

"We see the same need to strengthen the sovereignty of Europe and of our countries. We want to consistently support Ukraine in its resistance to aggression, while at the same time nurturing the transatlantic relationship. We are determined to maintain it at the best possible level," Donald Tusk emphasized.

In the face of the rapidly changing global situation, Europe needs unity.

"Aid to Ukraine, security on the eastern flank, cooperation on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and modern technologies, in all these areas Europe must believe in its own strength and capabilities. No one will guarantee our security if we do not do it ourselves," the Prime Minister assessed.

An example of solidarity between states was France's assistance in September 2025, when Russian drones violated Polish airspace.

"You reacted swiftly when we were the target of a Russian provocation. In that moment of uncertainty, France's rapid response was unambiguous and confirmed that NATO is something very real, and that in difficult moments you can count on European allies," the Prime Minister recalled.

President Emmanuel Macron also highlighted the dimension of shared security.

"Polish-French relations are today at a historic level. This trust will be reinforced, because it is in the interest of our countries. Europe's freedom depends on the ability to defend itself and on the independence of European nations,” President Macron noted.

Warsaw and Paris announced further deepening of cooperation in key areas of security and European policy.

The Strategic Rapprochement of Poland and France

Polish-French cooperation is delivering economic results and strengthening the capacity of both states.

"We have just had very promising talks on energy, and on military and space cooperation," the Prime Minister said.

Poland is becoming an increasingly attractive partner for France.

"We are a success story. We are growing the fastest in Europe and spending the most on defence. We expect a partnership of equals in trade and mutual investment in energy, the defence industry, and infrastructure," Donald Tusk stressed.

The Prime Minister noted that the President of France expressed understanding for Poland's local content policy supporting domestic industry.

Another significant area of Polish-French cooperation is protecting children and young people from internet addiction.

"We will work closely on this, and it is also worth developing a solution at the European level," the Prime Minister assessed.

Polish-French cooperation is developing dynamically and now spans an ever-wider range of fields.

"We have drawn up an action plan for the coming months covering security, nuclear energy, culture, social media, and artificial intelligence. We will continue to work together for the benefit of Poland, France, and Europe," President Macron declared.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk also underscored the broad scope of Polish-French cooperation.

"I can say that our cooperation, from nuclear cooperation to joint military exercises, is a partnership with no limits whatsoever," the Prime Minister assured.

During the Gdańsk summit, a joint declaration on energy was signed, along with a letter of intent on cooperation in satellite telecommunications, and an agreement between the Institut Français, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Polish Institute in Paris on the organisation of the France-Poland Season 2027.

The summit concluded with a ceremony to present the Bronisław Geremek Award for contributions to strengthening Polish-French relations. The laureate was stage and film actor Andrzej Seweryn.
