Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with the head of the Swedish government Ulf Kristersson at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The talks focused on security and defence cooperation both in Europe and bilaterally between Poland and Poland and Sweden. The heads of government also discussed issues related to the war in Ukraine and the upcoming Polish presidency of the Council of the EU. Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed Polish's full support for Sweden's presence in NATO.
A common view of Europe's security
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that Poland and Sweden have a long tradition of cooperation.
- We already have a long tradition of cooperation. We are united by geography – the Baltic Sea is our common responsibility when it comes to the security of this region, but we are also united by our views. We have exactly the same opinion on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the need to help Ukraine or maintain transatlantic ties," said the head of the Polish government.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson reaffirmed Sweden's readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the area of defence and security.
- Together with my government, I look forward to cooperation in the coming years and the renewal of our strategic partnership, joint commitment to cooperation
in the area of security and defence, as well as in the field of business and innovation," said the head of the Swedish government.
Polish's strong support for Sweden's presence in NATO
- I reaffirmed Polish's full support for Sweden's active presence in NATO. Your decision to join NATO was one of the best news we heard in Warsaw. It also gives us all a sense of greater security and greater solidarity. Cooperation between us – also within NATO – is something very promising, stressed Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The head of the Polish government offered Sweden full support in the process of joining NATO. He also stressed that it would be a mistake for one NATO country to block the presence of another country that is ready to actively work for common security.
Poland and Sweden among those most involved in helping Ukraine
For nearly two years, Ukraine has been struggling with Russia's brutal aggression on its territory. During this time, Poland and Sweden are actively supporting Ukrainians in their fight for freedom.
- I would like to express my appreciation to Polish for such a leadership position in supporting Ukraine. The position expressed by the new Polish government is an extremely important example for all European countries. We are living in a new, dangerous reality, fraught with security and defence challenges, the most important since the Cold War.
Effective protection of the eastern border of Polish
Prime Minister Donald Tusk thanked Sweden for its understanding and support in the field of illegal migration.
- Especially in this part of Europe, irregular migrants have an additional security dimension. Protecting the border with Russia and Belarus, protecting against illegal migration, is also part of our defence policy. Both regimes use illegal migration as a tool for such a new, specific "hybrid war". We need to be aware of this. I confirmed to the Prime Minister that Poland will be determined to effectively protect our eastern border," assured the head of the Polish government.
Together against unfair competition
Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured that Poland and Sweden will cooperate intensively on shaping the future European policy – one that will protect the markets against unfair competition.
- Thank you for your exchange of comments on the need to protect our markets from unfair competition. This experience, both Swedish and Polish, will be very useful in shaping European policy when it comes to internal market issues, competitiveness also in geopolitical
and defence issues, said Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The Prime Minister of the Polish government also informed the Prime Minister of Sweden about the problems on the Polish agricultural products market.
I will expect our partners in the EU to work together on solutions that can reconcile climate protection with the interests of large social and professional groups, such as farmers," stressed the Prime Minister
