25.06.2025
Three, two, one... the loud countdown to the launch of the Ax-4 mission rocket echoed not only at Cape Canaveral but also across Poland - including at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, where Prime Minister Donald Tusk watched the broadcast of this historic moment. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, the second Pole in space, will spend approximately two weeks on the International Space Station (ISS).
A Historic Moment for Poland
At 8:31 AM, all of Poland held its breath, watching the launch of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski onboard. Among the many Poles cheering for the astronaut was Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who shared his excitement on social media shortly after the launch:
“We did it! Poland has reached for the stars”
— wrote the Prime Minister on X (formerly Twitter).
Polish Science Aboard the ISS
As part of Mission Ignis, Uznański-Wiśniewski will carry out 13 experiments aboard the ISS in the fields of technology, biology, medicine, and psychology — all developed by Polish scientists and engineers.
Mission Ignis (Latin for “fire”) is the first Polish technological and scientific mission to the International Space Station.
“Today, we’re taking a giant step toward Poland’s technological future — a Poland built on science, knowledge, and vision. May this mission be the beginning of an era in which our courage and determination shape a modern Poland — for us and for future generations,”
— said Uznański-Wiśniewski from aboard the Dragon capsule.
The four-member crew, commanded by Peggy Whitson, is expected to dock at the International Space Station on Thursday around 1:00 PM Polish time.
All of Poland is rooting for the astronauts — and we hope Sławosz will inspire a new generation to explore space in the years to come!
