07.12.2021
“We have to realise how great of a weapon the internet actually is and how necessary it is right now to develop, under the leadership of the UN, the appropriate regulations,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the opening ceremony of the 16th United Nations (UN) Internet Governance Forum – IGF 2021. The issue of internet governance on equal terms was discussed, among others, by representatives of governments, the private sector, the scientific community and social organisations. Poland is hosting the IGF for the first time. During the Forum, the Prime Minister has met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Liu Zhenmin. The conversation between the two concerned, among others, digital topics on the UN agenda.
Global solutions concerning the internet
As emphasised by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, it is necessary to define the best practices and obligations in the scope of internet governance for all countries in the world.
The Head of the Polish Government has pointed out that digital issues are becoming increasingly prominent in discussions held within the UN. This has been influenced by the crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused many aspects of everyday life to move to the web. Rapid development of global communications infrastructure is also significant, making it necessary to implement innovative solutions in the field of communications.
