On this occasion, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has met with representatives of veteran circles in Wrocław. As the Prime Minister emphasised, through various actions, the government expresses its gratitude to the veterans and cares for their well-being. On Good Friday, the Prime Minister has extended to the veterans his best wishes for a healthy and peaceful Easter.

Poland pays homage to you for your courage and for what you have done for the Republic of Poland

"We are extremely grateful for what you have done for Poland. For not hesitating to throw your lives on the sacrificial pyre. You had courage and the desire for freedom in your hearts, " said the Prime Minister during the meeting, recalling the events of that time. The head of the Polish government has referred to the talks that were held today on the clash of civilisations during World War II, but also on the current clash of civilisations – caused by that civilisation from the East, which tramples on human rights and destroys the defenceless, wants to brutally introduce its lawlessness.

Defence of independent Ukraine

The Prime Minister, while thanking the veterans for their struggle for the freedom of Poland, has referred to the struggles of Ukrainian citizens for the independence of their country. "Just like today the defenders of Ukraine, you also fought on all fronts for the independent Republic of Poland." As he emphasised: "Today, I was singularly honoured to have met people who fought for our freedom. Also today, Ukraine is fighting not only for their independence but also for our freedom.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the balance of power in Europe. It changes security and geopolitics. For 50 days, Ukrainians have been fighting for the security of Europe. Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, Motyzhyn are the names of places that each of us will remember – these are the places where Russians committed genocide.

Allowances for anti-communist opposition activists and persons repressed for political reasons

"Our government tries its best to honour all veterans and combatants, but also to give them a small notion of justice, gratitude and concern for their material being. That is why the government, not so long ago, passed a law on the payment of additional PLN 3,000," reminded the Prime Minister.
The Act of 19 December 2021 – on cash benefits for anti-communist opposition activists and persons repressed for political reasons, made it possible to grant over 13,800 decisions on the payment of a one-off benefit in the amount of PLN 3,000. Entitled to this allowance are repressed persons and anti-communist opposition activists who received this status no later than 31 December 2021.

Development of the Veteran Law in the Third Polish Republic

Pursuant to the Act of 24 January 1991 on combatants and certain persons who are the victims of wartime and post-war repression, we have reactivated the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Repression.
New categories of veterans have been added, including in partciular soldiers of the post-war independence underground. The number of persons benefiting from special rights for victims of repression has also been increased. In addition to the already supported victims of German repression, Siberians and prisoners of the Stalinist period have been included.
In the years 2015–2020, we have expanded and unified the benefits granted to each category of Veteran Law beneficiaries.
