International law is the only way to preserve peace

According to Poland, it is crucial to maintain the unity of Western countries in the talks with Russia, which is why the Polish government has been undertaking intensive diplomatic efforts in this regard for many weeks now. In recent weeks, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has spoken about the threat from the East, among others, with the German Chancellor, the French President and the Prime Ministers of the UK, Italy, Ukraine, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Norway and Slovenia. A debate on Ukraine was also held during the recent European Council summit. The head of the Polish government discussed a set of significant sanctions, not only from the point of view of Russia's relations with the EU but also with the United States and United Kingdom.

“We are confronted with an aggressive policy on the part of Russia. We must be strong and united in response to threats from the East because we have forgotten that they are real," said the Prime Minister. He pointed out that President Putin wants the EU to be strongly divided. We agree with the UK and the US on the sanctions against Russia and on showing unity.

Moreover, Poland provides support to Ukraine by supplying materials, including armaments and military equipment. The Council of Ministers also adopted a resolution by circulation, establishing a Government Programme - Aid to Ukraine. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki established inter-ministerial teams responsible for the acceptance by Poland of refugees and wounded persons from Ukraine.

Further development of NATO's defence strategy is necessary

„We cannot accept the idea that some European countries have a greater right to peace and security than others. All sovereign states are equal and have an equal right to live in peace, regardless of whether they are stronger or weaker," said the Prime Minister.

To prevent Russian attempts to test the Alliance, it is necessary to further develop NATO's deterrence and defence strategy by strengthening NATO's presence on the eastern flank, increasing the readiness of the armed forces of European allies, conducting military exercises in the region as well as preparing command headquarters and defence planning activities.

At present, there are approximately 5,000 American soldiers in Poland within the framework of NATO and bilateral cooperation with the United States. In the last several days, an additional 4,700 US troops have been transferred to Poland in connection with security threats in our region. Polish and American soldiers cooperate during many military exercises and raise the level of interoperability within the framework of the NATO Battalion Battle Group.

Russia's actions and the situation in Ukraine

“For several years, Russia has been pursuing three strategic objectives: restoring political control over the post-Soviet states, establishing a security 'buffer zone' in Central Europe and giving the states on NATO's eastern borders second-class status, and reducing the US presence on the European continent,” the Prime Minister continued. “Ukraine has the sovereign right to choose its own future as an integral and independent state,” he concluded.
