Prime Minister Donald Tusk: Istanbul Convention is to protect women and children from violence
30.01.2024
The head of government has decided to withdraw the request to examine the constitutionality of the Istanbul Convention from the Constitutional Tribunal. During the press conference, Prime Minister Donald Tusk also delivered good news for entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. The government will reduce VAT for this sector as early as 1 April 2024.
Request concerning the anti-violence convention withdrawn from the Constitutional Tribunal
In 2020, the then head of government Mateusz Morawiecki submitted a request to the Constitutional Tribunal to examine the compliance of the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence with the Polish Constitution. Prime Minister Donald Tusk unequivocally assessed that the protection of women and children from violence was a topic beyond politics. Therefore, he has signed a document withdrawing the request from the Constitutional Tribunal.
Protecting women and children from violence is something that should never be the subject of a political argument, but a shared concern to implement it as effectively as possible - said the Prime Minister.
Reduced VAT for the beauty industry
The head of government pointed out that the beauty industry in Poland has grown significantly. Entrepreneurs felt unjustifiably wronged because they were charged higher VAT than, for example, the similar hairdressing industry.
This is a serious subject – it affects some 30,000 companies. Most of them are very small companies. Nearly 100,000 people find employment there, so I hope this will bring relief and a sense of justice to a very large professional group - stressed Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The decision will already come into force on 1 April.
